Cinnamon and Thistledown, where are you going?
We're goin to visit Clover in the Water-meadow
we've made her this nice sleeping-cap from gossamer and shadows.
Its very difficult to see, I said
are you sure you've brought it with you?
O yes - its invisible by day
but when the moonlight catches it
it looks quite colourful and gay!
We got the gossamer from a star-fairy
and collected the shadows ourselves in the Elfin Forest at dusk.
Jemina Spider helped us spin it and we baked a special raisin cake
for all her two hundred children.
Well here's the Water-meadow now but where is Clover?
Have you seen her, Bumblebee buzzing on the daisy?
She's gone to see old Riverweed
who's not been quite well recently
- she's knitted him a pair of boots from dew and drifting pollen
and very nice they are too, with buckles bright and golden.
O dear, said Cinnamon to Thistledown
I'm afraid our sleeping-cap might melt
if we have to carry it much farther
- the river's still two fields away
and the sun is so hot and bright today.
Lets leave it underneath this stone and then come back tonight.
But when they came back later the sleeping-cap was gone!
But whats that colourful thing jumping inbetween the trees
in the silver moonlight - its our lovely sleeping-cap
and under it two lively knees!
Why you silly Cinnamon, when you put it under the stone
did you think to look who was living there?
You've gone and placed it over Peter Frog
and now he can't see where he's going - what a silly animal.
Look - he's jumped right into that mossy old log.
Quickly, after him while he's still dazed!
Wait a minute, said Clover, waking up suddenly and staring
about her (well wouldn't you with all that noise).
She took in the situation at once.
Why not let him keep it, she said, all it needs is a couple
of eye-holes and maybe a bit of string to tie it under his chin
- and guess what? today was his birthday!
As you can see I don't really need a cap in order to sleep
and besides, by now its bound to be quite slimey.
But thank you for the thought all the same
- now what about some cakes and tea?
What a jolly feast beneath the grinning Moon!
besides Clovers meadow-tarts we'd also brought a big slice
of our raisin cake.
Peter Frog had some to help him recover from his collision
with the log
and then Jemina Spider came by with her two hundred children
(what a time to still be up!)
But who is this trotting up politely?
Why its Frederick Fox.
Good Evening Mr. Fox, how do you do
would you like to try some raisin cake too?
